About Time to Compete
It Started with Gibson
Established in 2023 by Gibson Harnett, “Time to Compete” were the first words and first message he posted following his diagnosis of late-stage clear cell sarcoma.
The words became his mantra as he went through rounds of treatment, demonstrating grace and energy every step of the way.
Perhaps the most incredible part of his journey was his early recognition that many young adults in his position would not be lucky enough to be part of such a supportive network of friends and family.
And so, Time to Compete was born with the mission of bettering the lives of young adults battling cancer through financial support, education, and the power of community. Gibson promised to make sure any person going through a battle with cancer would be reminded that they are not alone.
Gibson died on January 4, 2024. He was 24 years old.
Gibson believed that Time to Compete means putting everything you have into whatever you are doing at any given time. It means fighting for the things, as well as the people you love. Everyone wants victory but competing always transcends winning or losing.
The Pillars of Time To Compete
Time to Compete was born out of Gibson’s desire to provide real, meaningful support to the thousands of young adults battling cancer. His original goals have grown into a movement built on empathy, care, and the power of community. By emphasizing Unity, Perseverance, and Vulnerability, Time to Compete creates a support network for those who need it most.
While our pilot program is currently limited to those living in Maine, aged 19-29 with a cancer diagnosis, this is not the extent of our vision. As we grow as an organization, we have plans to expand our Time to Compete community beyond the state of Maine. Ultimately, we hope to support as many young cancer patients as possible.
Unity
Unity signifies the strength and power that comes from the people who surround you during your fight. This pillar represents the idea that no matter what challenge is posed by your diagnosis or predicament, it can be better overcome when individuals, families, friends, and communities work together. Simple things like paying for gas, or affording groceries when you are undergoing treatment, become real world challenges for many Maine residents. Unity is about building networks where you can lean on others for financial as well as emotional support. Through unity Time to Compete aims to create a sense of belonging and reduce the feeling of isolation that comes with a cancer diagnoses.

Perseverance
Perseverance is the unwavering resilience needed to face the trials and tribulations that life throws at you. By connecting survivors, athletes, caregivers, and patients, Time to Compete aims to share that feeling of resolve and strength with the young adults who are fighting day in and day out against this terrible disease.
Vulnerability
Vulnerability is an often-overlooked quality of battling cancer. Young adults who are diagnosed with late-stage cancer experience a wide range of different emotions, fears, and uncertainties that they don’t have the ability to handle on their own. Time to Compete encourages open and honest communication with your community as well as our virtual community. This networking is essential for emotional healing and building a support system where people can listen, learn and try understand what you’re going through.
Our Board
The Time to Compete board of directors is composed of dedicated volunteers, including Gibson’s friends, family, and experienced professionals. Together, they share a passion for fulfilling Gibson’s vision by supporting young adults with cancer and striving to make a tangible difference in their lives.
